Sports Physicals Q & A

What is a sports physical?

Many sports organizations require a physical examination before your child can participate in sports. The exam allows your ExacCare provider to ensure your child is in great physical health and is able to participate in their chosen sport without limitations.

What happens during a sports physical?

Your ExacCare provider initially discusses your child’s medical history and family history to determine if other medical testing is necessary. It’s important to provide your provider with as much medical information as possible about your child and your family history of medical conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease.

You also need to provide your ExacCare provider with a list of prescription and over-the-counter medications your child regularly takes, including asthma and allergy medications and vitamins. Make a list of the drug name and dosage amount or bring in your child’s prescription bottles.

During the physical examination, your ExacCare provider checks your child’s height and weight and evaluates their blood pressure and pulse. Your provider also examines the heart, lungs, ears, nose, and throat, checking for any abnormalities or infection.

A physical requires a check of your child’s joints, strength, and flexibility to ensure they are able to be physically active in their chosen sport.

Once they complete the physical examination, your ExacCare provider fills out the necessary medical forms you need for sports registration. In the event your provider finds a medical issue that limits your child’s participation in sports, they discuss the details with you and may offer a referral to a specialist for further treatment.

What are the benefits of a sports physical?

Even if your sports organization doesn’t require a physical exam, the staff at ExacCare highly recommends scheduling one for your child.

One of the benefits of a sports physical is the thorough evaluation of your child’s health annually. Often during these types of physicals, the ExacCare team identifies potential medical issues that would otherwise go undetected.

Another benefit of a sports physical is the opportunity for your ExacCare provider to provide your child with tips for preventing sports-related injuries and recommendations for strength-training exercises and other activities that make your child a stronger, better-prepared athlete.
